O sing unto the Lord a new song: sing unto the Lord, all the earth. Sing unto the Lord, bless his name; show forth his salvation from day to day.
---Psalm 96: 1-2
Have you ever noticed how people hum or whistle mindlessly when they are happily occupied doing something? Have you ever found yourself silently singing a pleasant tune that mysteriously planted itself in your mind? Have you ever pondered the beauty of a bird’s song, the crickets’ chirping, or whales’ unique melodies?
As humans, we can quietly listen to music and even unconsciously engage in making music. However, this is not what the psalmist is speaking of in Psalm 96. The psalmist’s words are spoken in the imperative! Singing is not an optional activity in the worship of our God! When we combine our voices with sacred texts, we, as a church, can enrich our worship experience by heartily making a joyful noise during the congregational singing. As our voices are lifted corporately, our spirits are nurtured individually.
I encourage you to not only to carry a song in your heart for our Lord, but to let your love for Him flow from your heart through your voice as you sing praise to Him in a “new song” each week in worship!
